Today’s story behind the photo

This is one of my very favorite waterfalls to photograph. It is found after just a short hike from the road.

When I first learned about this waterfall It was at the Baraga County Tourist center. Tracy asked me if I had been to Ogemaw Falls. With a surprise look I responded with a no. She was just as surprised as I was that I had never been there because it’s close and easy to get to. So Tracy explained where it was and how to get there.

After a short drive I arrived where there is a small area to pull the car off the road and park. After applying a very generous amount of bug repellent I gathered up my gear and headed down the short trail to the falls.

Upon arrival it was enchantment at first sight. A beautiful waterfall tucked in the forest just a hop skip and a jump from the road.

After walking around a bit taking in the beauty of the falls I had an idea how I wanted to frame the image, I set my camera on the tripod and began to take my photographs.

With great anticipation I finished, packed up my gear and headed for home.

Arriving home I quickly loaded the images in the computer. Huge smile on my face, anticipating the opportunity to view all the amazing pictures I had taken at this newly discovered waterfall.

My excitement quickly turned to huge disappointment. Every one of the images were horrible. What I failed to see when I was talking pictures was that the sun was shining directly on the water, making it way over exposed. The adventure was a total loss.

After spending time thinking about what I could have done differently, I decided to try again. Besides it was only about 30 miles away and what was there to lose, I had already failed once.

When I arrived it was getting close to sunset and I wouldn’t have much time. So I dosed myself with repellent and headed back in the forest.

Having already been there it didn’t take long to set up a start taking photos. I shot till dark and headed back home.

This time I was not so excited due to the huge disappointment from the previous attempt. I loaded the images on the computer and…..

Well now you know the story behind the photo.

This was a great learning experience for me. Even when you have a complete failure, don’t give up. Get out there, learn from your mistakes and try again. Don’t give up on your adventures, go out and enjoy what life has to offer.

I continue to photograph this waterfall and is the location I have photographed the most.
