The story behind the photo #2

The second lens I bought after getting the new digital camera was a Nikon 14mm f2.8 ultra wide. This lens was not only very wide but also pretty fast.

When you get a new lens you are pretty excited about what new types of photos you will be able to capture. So as you can imagine I was talking pictures of most everything. This lens was so wide I had to be careful not to get my feet in the image.

It was a cool clear night and I decided I would go up on the hill behind my house and see if I could get some photos of the stars. I set up the tripod, mounted the camera and started my attempt at shooting the stars.

Because the lens has a very wide angle of view and there are so many trees I found it difficult to get a good shot. After moving to different places a trying to overcome all the trees I decided it was time to call it quits.

I packed up and headed back to the house. Walking back on the trail I came to the hill that heads down to the driveway and there it was. The shot I had been looking for. I sat down the tripod, lined up the frame and took the picture. I only took one because I pretty much had lost faith in getting what I was looking for.

The next morning I loaded the shots from the night before on the computer. With low expectations I sorted through the images and to my surprise there was exactly what I was hoping to capture.

And now you know the story behind the photo.

This image has been printed on both metal and canvas for clients and is one of my favorite night images.

  2. That’s starry night! What a beautiful story captured! I love the one you sent us with 2 shooting stars and the milky way and trees! I too look at it before bed. Very calming and dreamy. Beautiful work.
